Compensation, for what it’s worth, hasn’t collapsed: Glassdoor’s 2026 median base for senior DevOps/SRE sits at $185,000, with the 25th-75th percentile running $155,000–$230,000 (hackerx.org). The roles are real and the pay is real. What’s changed is the cost of finding out whether a specific one of them is real.
Return-to-office mandates make the funnel worse in a specific, measurable way: 54% of Fortune 100 employees were under five-day office requirements by Q2 2025, up from 11% a year earlier, and a full RTO mandate cuts the candidate pool by 50-70% (jobsbyculture.com).
